Structures like old wooden covered bridges or the tallest of skyscrapers. Architects played a part in the design in both of these and all the structures in between. Architects helped evolve our past into our present and will push us right on into the future, changing the face of the world along the way. They help make our homes and schools safer and more functional as well as more environmentally friendly.

Architectural drafting is certainly a highly respectable career choice, especially for those with some artistic talent and a little imagination. This career could take you down many paths from small scale building design to redesigning entire cities. Your career as an architect could very well leave a mark that will stand for hundreds of years. Your designs could possibly be stronger tornado or hurricane proof homes that could save lives in the future…possibilities are endless.

As the focus on green energy and saving energy becomes more mainstream, architectural drafting will continue to be a very lucrative career choice. Cities are changing the way they want to look and operate everyday. Buildings that can provide their own power source and are self sufficient are saving tons of money. A draftsman that can incorporate this new technology in with eye appealing structures will never have trouble working again. Just imagine a school or business that has a brand new office or building…but has no electric bill each month. That money saved can be put somewhere else where it can be of value or do more good.

Often times as a community sees one business “go green,” others will then want to follow in their footsteps. Green oriented businesses are almost always looked at by their communities as “the good guys.” An architectural draftsman that can do this for a city or business becomes much needed an sought after. In today’s economy and market a businesses ability to change and adapt often means whether it will succeed or fall by the wayside. Sometimes design changes are needed to keep a business completed…this makes you suddenly pretty valuable.

To get started in the field of architectural drafting you will need at least a two year associates degree. This education will provide you the training and skills you need to get you on your way. Computer aided drafting (CAD) skills are a must for today’s draftsman. These skills will allow your work to be put into action by the engineers and contractors, without CAD training you will have trouble competing in today’s workforce. A two year degree in this field can open doors for you that you never thought possible, and take you places you never dreamed of. Keeping up with developing technology will insure you are on top of your game as opportunities unfold before you for years to come. Even as you gain experience in the field, taking a class or two down the road is not out of the question.

Being a good problem solver is a good attribute you will need as an architectural draftsman. Engineers often run into problems that they need help with, and you will be the one they will turn to for that help. Might be something simple like re-routing water lines or moving complete walls to make room for something else. The draftsman will be depended on to make these types of decisions quickly and safely. You may have a crew of lesser experienced draftsman working under and you will be the one they turn to when they have questions of their own. As you continue to grow and learn in your trade the opportunities for you will too.

A draftsman can expect to start with a salary of say twenty to thirty thousand a year. This often depends on where you choose to work. A smaller city will most likely have less building going on than a larger one. The area in which you choose to live and work should be carefully planned ahead of time. Many draftsman are okay with the smaller cities and a more relaxed way of life. Others however are not, they want to be in the thick of things and work on big projects, or even several projects at one time. For these more ambitious draftsman they often make way more ambitious salaries as well.

Most all community colleges scattered across the U.S. have a drafting and design program from which you can get your start. ITT Tech in Tennessee, Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan, Herzing University in Wisconsin, these are just a few of the options available to you. In only two years time you could be on your way to improving the world around you and enjoying a brand new career. Not only that you could design your own dream home and have it just exactly like you want it. Could be a conventional style home with all the trimmings or something completely modern that will be the envy to all that see it.

Yes the architectural drafting career is wide open right now and the future looks even brighter. A draftsman can literally draw the road to his future one sketch at a time. What an exciting way to approach life. A career that allows financial success and so many other satisfying rewards as well. Natural disasters often force communities and towns to rebuild and redesign. Architectural drafting plays a huge part in this process. The towns suddenly have need to be built back, not only quickly but safer than they were before. Being a part of designing things that make people more comfortable as well as safer has to be the ultimate satisfaction and reward.

Rendering Techniques - Hand and Computer Aided

Hand rendering techniques and teachings, have always been central to display graphics and visual arts design. Long before modern man ever arrived on the scene, hand renderings and drawings appeared on the walls of ancient caves, and were thought to represent our thoughts and imagination through artistic physical manifestations. This became the medium through which the art of drawing was first pioneered.

Along with the appearance of graceful flowing movements are the underlying intrinsic idiosyncratic imperfections of stroke and movement, which are characteristically inherent to hand renderings, exclusively. These designs cannot be exactly duplicated, nor precisely replicated, by any state-of-the-art rendering computer software produced today. In that sense, hand renderings will always be unique.

As long as human life exists, there will always be hand renderings, they are here to stay, and will never go away. Classical hand rendering are still broadly used in defined areas of artistic work. Some examples would be: historic renderings, public and private art, galleries and exhibit works, including a variety of advertising mediums, and the list goes on. Hand renderings will continue to be used in varying degrees. This is especially true of candid reality drafts, along with various sketch/drawing practices including hand cartoon/amusement (but not limited to). These and other mediums will continue to rely on hand rendering techniques. Some use both, in concert to create one-of-a-kind interrelated hybrid works for both true and existential production and design. Technology may experience greater inclusion and integration at a later date. However, purists do not wish to see any amalgamation or mixture of what many consider to be two completely separate worlds of art and design. So, from early Paleolithic cave paintings, to Fantasmagorie, to pixilation and Chinese Zoetrope, hand renderings whether new or old will always be part of the fabric of art.

However, with the advent of design software and advancements in animation/automation/modeling and display technologies and techniques, entire areas have opened up within technological realms that traditional hand renderings cannot begin to compare to. This is not to say that software/applications/programs are unable to come close to the artistic form that remains "hand rendering," however, the scale and metamorphic evolution of computer software and applications, open up an entirely new universe. A realm within a realm; inside a reality within itself. Something so spectacular and moving unlike anything ever created before on earth. That’s what technology and advanced software and computer rendered designs brings you.

Hand rendering techniques were long been believed to be a required core element in understand the development the art and specialization of advanced computer design, rending and modeling. However, with the immersion of computers and technology, the belief that one's skills be rooted or mired in hand rendering and its constituent components, has lost much of the footing it once had. When we compare the results of those who were reared within the world of hand renderings, versus those whose rearing was almost completely 100% computer application based, it appears any perceived disparity of skills that may have once believed existed, has virtually disappeared. The playing field is not only "even" these days, but those mired in advanced digital technology and computer application based modalities, believe those reared in a digital environment have surpassed the arts rudimentary beginnings.

Advancements in animation technology have completely revolutionized the nature of design visualization and expectations of clientele. What we are finding as the predominate theme within today’s business customers and professionals, is an expectation in which advanced cutting edge technological solutions are necessary for the production of their designs, concepts and projects. And, in a real sense, they have come to demand that “the best that technology has to offer” is the standard, rather than the exception.

Let’s take a look at a few active solutions:

3ds Max is one of the premier modeling rendering and robust animation packages around today. Some of the additional features of the product include subsurface scattering ambient occlusion which are variations of 3ds Max's shaders. This is a very powerfully designed software package that incorporate the latest advances in rendering modeling and animation techniques and has met with rave reviews from industry experts. Graphic designers, as well as engineers, visualization specialists, effects artists, game developers and architects are among a few that have greatly benefited from 3d Max. The functionality of composition coupled with display and rendering variations give artists and specialists infinite variations of designs.

Cinema 4D is another powerful and extremely diverse software solution's for designers, artist and other specialists with a need for stellar compositions and renderings on a professional level. Cinema 4D has successfully incorporated polygonal subd modeling that is combined with other features such as advanced textural, and lighting rendering techniques. Cinema 4Dt has been used by HHVISION to create stadium designs as part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup's advanced event planning and preparation committee, which is scheduled to be held in Qatar in 2022. Source files can be easily imported and integrated into Cinema 4D to render scenes of ultra high complexity, and with stunning visualization effects and accuracy. Utilizing Cinema allowed 4D HHVISION to not only come in ahead of the deadline for submissions to the committee, but provide a completed solution that it believes will have a positive affect and outcome on the committee's decision.

Maya is a third professional product for 3d animation and modeling. It is a professional application that has been used for visual effects in major motion pictures, game development and related architecture applications. The user defines his or her workspace which allows one to edit the or create scene elements which be saved in multiple formats. Scenes derive their element's from node-based architecture. As such, each individual scene establishes as its own attributes, and customization within multiple planes and dimensions. The final result is a networking platform whose nodes are interdependently based upon the action of one another.

When all is said and done nothing no hand rendering can compare to the visual animation, modeling and architectural design and the unlimited array of visual representations and values that computer art and graphics can produce. Hand rendering will also be a very basic classic art which possesses a character and charm all its own. It that vein, one hopes the medium will never cease to exist. However when advanced design is a necessity, and when speed is also an important factor, computer based animation, modeling and rendering cannot be touched, and will only progress and further evolve as time transpires.

3ds Max Architectural Modeling

3DS Max is a modeling, animation, and rendering package created by Autodesk media. The program comes packed full of modeling capabilities. It has a flexible plug in architecture program which can be easily utilized. The program has also been used by video game developers, and of course architectural visualization studios. In recent times it has also been utilized to help in the production of certain films. The latest version of this program comes with shaders, dynamic simulation, particle systems, radiosity, normal map creation/rendering, global illumination, and its own scripting language. It has proved to be a revolutionary tool for many architects however. This is a short tutorial on how to use the program to create a rendering of a house.

This basic tutorial will show you how to create a low polygon house, and how you can add texture for the end result. First of all you should create a box with minimum segments. This can be easily done because of all the action buttons you need are easy to find. Next you will need to convert it to an editable polygon. This is done by right clicking on object and choose convert to editable polygon. Next click edges and select two horizontal edges in front. Connect the edges with the connect tool. To do this go to the editable polygon menu select edit edges and click connect.

Next select polygons and select two polygons and put them in front of the box. Then you will have to extrude using the extrude tool, which can be found at the edit polygon menu. Go to the top view and change selection type to vertices. Using select and move tool try to position the vertices to your liking. Next you will need to select all vertical edges. Then you must connect the selected edges into two separate segments. Next we will need to create windows for your house. For this you will need to select two different edges where you want your windows to be. Next connect them with four different segments. Select the edges once more and then connect them with six segments this time. To prepare for the creation of a garage select edges, and then select edges with two segments and select the pinch button. Next you will have to create a step in front of the house, to do this select edge. Then you must connect them.

Now while you are in the connect edges menu slide the step to the bottom. Next you will need to select horizontal borders of your windows. Then connect with two segments and pinch them to about -79. Next make a new selection then press the connect button, but do not change anything. Change the selection type to polygons and insert them in new selection. Next click extrude polygons. For the glass select the polygons of your windows and click extrude, now your windows are complete. Next you will need to select all polygons on top of the house. The bevel selected you will need to input is height 1, outline 1. Next in the perspective view rotate view to the top and choose edge selection type. Make edges to your liking using select tool and connect. Next choose vertices selection and select two vertices. Then click connect on the edit vertices menu.In the position of the roof select two edges. Then move them over to the Y coordinate. Next you will need to select two vertices on the left side of the roof. You will need to collapse them next. To do this go to edit geometry and click collapse to make one edge, repeat for the opposite side.

Next you will need to move up the center of the roof. You will then need to make separate selections for all parts. This is done by selecting roof in the polygon properties menu. Then type 1 in set id and press enter. It's a standard for TV and film, visual effects, video games and graphic design.

This program provides some of the best, most thorough tool sets for 3D modeling that you can find in this industry. Autodesk 3ds Max 2011 permits you to use NURBS, spline and polygon-based modeling to generate organic and parametric objects. You'll get more than one hundred high-tech tools for free form 3D design and polygonal modeling, and exacting control over the quantity of points and faces in any given object when utilizing the ProOptimizer tech. You'll also be able to simplify any selection you make by 75% and you'll never lose any detail.

You can maintain your scene's assets while you perform layering, mapping and texture painting operations. Among these operations are spine mapping, removal of distortion, UV stretching, mirroring, decal placement, blurring and tiling. The Muscle and Skin Modifier within the CAT tool assists you when carefully and precisely controlling the ways in which the model's skeleton deforms are different parts are set into motion.

Different tools assist you when generating effects and dynamics, including fur and hair (and other effects that incorporate strands), as well as cloth. Even blades of grass can be exactingly controlled and styled. Particle effects which are driven by events, like snow, spray, fire and water can all be manipulated using scripts and expressions.

Autodesk 3ds Max 2011 provides excellent software for 3D rendering, which can quickly generate astounding imagery. New to Autodesk 3ds Max 2011, Quicksilver rendering tech helps you make top quality animatics and sketches to visualize your final animation. Mental Ray is another great rendering tool which rapidly establishes realistic lighting situations and customized shadows, using the idle processing units of your computer system.

FBX formatting means that you'll be able to trade information with other popular 3D programs, as well as have support for over thirty other related formats, which includes FLT, SKP, OBJ, IPT, DWG, IPT, DXF. 3DS and AI, among others.

When you buy Autodesk 3ds Max Composite, you'll get a high-powered, high dynamic range compatible compositor which allows you to control depth of field, paint in both vector and raster, motion blur, camera map, color correct and key, as well as other functions.

New aspects of Autodesk 3ds Max 2011 include the ability to edit and create detailed materials using the Slate editor, additional Viewpoint Canvas and Graphite Modeling tools, display of your materials via the Viewport function, the ability to customize your interface, and to save your work to earlier releases.

You can work with the software's trial version for thirty days. I rendered it with default scanline renderer. Well, Looks like lately I have been on a mission to sharpen my skills on 3ds max 9. Here you see a kinda toon looking mini shop, or mini store. It is my most recent work. I had spend close to around 5 or 6 hours on it. Well, including breaks of course. I am happy on how it turned out.

I will have this available for free soon. I will not post the free version just yet. See, I am currently saving some money for buying some accessories I need. So every little penny counts at this point. Once I reach my goal, which is not that high, I will leave the link here for free download.

For the meantime if you like my model much and do not wish to wait, and want to downloadright away, then head over to my turbosquid account and purchase it for very cheap right HERE. Well, actually 2 chairs and one stool to be exact. I try to make my models simple lowest polys possible for easy portability. Mind these are my designs, and hold rights to them. If you wish to download and use, I only ask you give me the credit, and say where you got the model from (HERE).

Ok, here we go. This is the first one. My main goal here was to create an old style chair from royalty. Meaning from a castle belonging to a King or Queen. I would guess that the material used for this type of chair would be wood. so the color accordingly. (download here)

The second one is a stool. I was just imagining in front of a piano of the modern days. Have no clue what ever made me think that. The main feature of this stool is the legs. The s-shape, snake style legs is what I think makes this chair stand out. (download here)

The third and my most recent chair. Kinda futuristic looking. I was thinking if I made and old style chair, I might also try a futuristic type also, although the design might not look very much futuristic, It kinda helped the shiny material I placed on it. It would seem rather hard and not so comfortable without cushions though. I picture this type of chair inside a space ship, many the enterprise or something. (download here)

Well, that is all for this session of chairs, I will probably keep making more, and although this is not exactly architecture, it is rather close when considering interior design. I hope you all have fun with the models. Thanks for visiting and till next time! xD

Free Luxury Sofa, 3DS Max 9

A little advertising image I made using photoshop. The challenge here was doing the railings and since my first attempt was a failure I had to create a new set in which the faces were not so many.

See, my first try had a rounded profile of the railings and so the 3ds max file went over 25 megabytes in memory space. There was that problem, and also the fact that I could not export it to 3ds file extension. I have learned that it is better to create low polys first and then add more in case it is needed. It keeps the files portable and less headache when you have a not so fast computer. So I deleted the round railings and put in new square profile, it is just as good as rounded, and wala! it is now under 500 kb.

Anyway, you can get access to my free max bridge here for download. file is .3ds.

Here is a video of it showing all around sides. I guess the trees is what made this somewhat a large file. I decided to do a video render of all the sides of the building so it won't seem just a perspective Hollywood stage. Unbelieable that the little 34 second video took 12 hours to render and 3 hours uploading to Youtube. That is a total of 15 hours of work! Well I am glad on how the video below turned out in HD though.

Pergola 4 On 3DS max

Detailed pergola, personal design #4, created in 3ds max 7, 3 lights sources used. This sword had actually been in my mind for a long time, just had not dedicated the time to actually make it on 3ds max. I guess all that Dissidia Final Fantasy playing has been part of the inspiration. Yes, I am especially referring to the great hero: Cloud. His sword now is more detailed on the game and much better than mine here! But I guess this is not that bad considering I did not spent much time and dedication to the details and placing better materials and such.

You can download the .3ds file extension here! Size is very portable at 198 kb, about 4500 vertices. I won't blame it on a particular reason, but in fact a whole lots of reasons. I got virus on my computer and it was a pain to use 3ds max. Even though I can get rid of some small fry viruses, some are just very sticky and won't go away. So I decided to re-install windows again. The other issue was that I have been busy doing other stuff. Finding time to work on some 3d models has not been in my schedule, when I really should, because Turbosquid site has been good to me. If things go well, from now on I will upload a couple of models I have on my mind.

Important: Remember that all the links on this site to my 100% free files have limit. Meaning they could expire if people stop downloading for some time. I will try to re-upload by request. (I think some links are already dead)

Ok, then on to business... Here is a quick rendering of some living room elements, including sofa, couch, and table with top made of glass. I try to keep things simple, so what you see here is what you get. file is a 3ds extension. I did not use any plug-ins, its simple rendered with default scanline renderer, I used 3 light sources, and the file very portable. Download It Here!

Hector F. Rendered with V-ray, but also compatible with default scanline renderer. This picture here is touched up on Photoshop CS. The elements created on Photoshop software are mainly the grass up front and the trees way in the back of the house. V-ray makes it look like a real drawing, as you can see the very thin outlines of the house, this is done using the V-ray toon enviroment effect. This be my recent work, and have liked the outcome of the entire work, that is why I am putting this piece as one of my favorite renderings as well as download. At that time I was getting more and more into 3ds max. This model was done on 3ds max 7. I no not have the actual model anymore. It stayed with the architectural company I was working for, but it is a shame since this model was really an all around object. Looking at it again I think I could have done more things to enhance the picture. I think my knowledge of the 3ds max software has greatly increased over these years, but still there is much more to learn. I remember I did a 30 inches by 42 inches rendering and my boss was really happy the this final product.

Rodeo Dr.

One of my favorite renderings. I did this on 3ds max 7 in 2007 for the architecture firm I worked for. Although I do not have this model available for download here in this blog here because it was never meant to be a full model, it just looks like its complete but in reality it only shows the necessary features. When rotated, the other parts of the house are missing. Nevertheless I am glad how it turned out, and I quite did not spend much time into this work.

Small Produce Store

Fruits baskets street scene and trees.
